This would have been extremely beneficial for Campo Santo as it would allow small companies with limited budgets, such as themselves, to have a larger target audience. Whilst researching into recent market trends within the games industry, I discovered that a market trend which would have affected the game’s release was the theory that indie games are now becoming more mainstream and therefore they are appealing to mass audiences instead of niche. Therefore, a PEGI rating can be used as a shortcut to certain contents of a game, such as sexual content, strong language and violence, which a title or box art cover may not be able to represent. Firewatch is an example of this, as one would not assume that there would be any sexual content within the indie game from the title. However, I do believe that PEGI ratings are important for parents to make a self-assessment on whether a game is appropriate for their children, as it can be difficult to assume the content of a game just based on title alone. For instance, the scene with the two drunk teens skinny dipping was in a cartoon style and was based in the background with nothing being shown, other than their discarded clothes on the shore. Personally, I believe that the PEGI rating that Firewatch received was possibly too high as the sexual content included within the game was incredibly brief and was not emphasised due to the art style used in the game. The PEGI rating that Firewatch was given was 16, this was due to nudity of a sexual nature and strong language. Therefore, with the profit taken into account, as well as the several awards given to the game, Firewatch was deemed a commercial success. Due to the high amount of copies sold, they received a profit of around $12 million. Firewatch was only released online, however although they did not sell any physical copies, they did sell over 1 million digital copies within the first year of the games release, resulting in a revenue of around $15 million.

The artstyle of Firewatch became its unique selling point and has since become an icon for the game, which has been reinforced by it receiving the award for Best 3D Visual Experience by Unity Awards 2016.
